Comedy is tragedy—plus time.
~Carol Burnett~
Twenty-one counties in Indiana have been declared disaster areas due to catastrophic flooding. Though we are fine, family, friends, and beloved small businesses are not.
Acts of God give no thought to your intentions. Nor to your calendar.
Nor to your Little Miss Muse who’s been patiently (hahahahaha) waiting to get back to the writing desk.
Acts of God come, go, and leave you with… all kinds of material.
Physical material that must be hosed off or carted off. Digital material that must be researched and emailed. Emotional material that must be felt and processed.
And, yes, there are bits of joyful material amid the dark. Caterpillars continue to morph into butterflies with no regard for current events. A rainbow with its “pot of gold” directly over devastated houses. Neighbors speaking to each other for the first time as they figure out whose canoe is on whose roof.
Then there’s the absurdity. Sooo much absurdity.
Like the tale of the taxidermied bear that floated around, found dry land, and decided to watch over my mother’s busted-up house. Not the least bit funny now, but one day, with enough time, it could be hilarious.
Until that day arrives, we'll keep processing all the material. Little Miss Muse will keep taking notes.
And we’ll keep waiting for dry land.
